I'm writing a paper on currency [how lovely?!] and need to know some of the common features they all have…besides being green and having someone influential on them.

Dig in your wallet (or you parent's, after asking of course) and look at an example of each.
Some observations from the top of my head:
serial numbers
"in god we trust"
mint location
value
signature

They probably all have "security strips" woven into them to hinder counterfeiting.
They probably all have "watermarks" — silhouettes printed in the paper that are only visible when held up to light — to prevent counterfeiting.
They probably all have "placettes," (sp??) which glow in the dark under ultraviolet light, for the same reason.
