because politicians put it there.

Wow- Ok God is real. I'm convinced other wise our incredibly honest and insightfull leaders wouldn't have it on our cash.

do some research he used to be very important back in 1963 we decided that there should be a separation of church and state… that also removed praying and bible reading in public schools what a shame

It was added during the cold war to make our nation seem more godly?
Which is kind of funny because to a lesser extent back then, and majorly today, our culture is the most materialistic and greedy in the world….

Because that was written before we became a pagan, mult-cultural, 'pluralistic' so-called society!

god is important to a lot of people in the US, it's true.
that does not justify god being in public places, because america was founded as a secular nation, to give everyone religious freedom. that includes people who don't agree with christianity.

if Thor is not important in the USA then why is HIS NAME written all over my calendar?
Thursday = Thor's Day

Where the heck did you get that ill information from - Seriously. Obviously you haven't been to the South darlin, because most of us here are God loving folk who still say One nation under God and in God we trust.

It was added to our money during the "red scare". It first appeared on paper money in 1957.

From the US Treasury web site itself:
The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout persons throughout the country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity on United States coins. From Treasury Department records, it appears that the first such appeal came in a letter dated November 13, 1861. It was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, Minister of the Gospel from Ridleyville, Pennsylvania,

Our founding fathers thouhgt so much of God that they formed the intire nation around pleasing God. That is why God's name is honored on our currency and in our courts.

It has to do with the red scare of the 50s when everyone was scared of communism. Atheism and communism were considered one in the same so they put God on the money to distance themselves from both.
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
Because religious nuts put it there in the 1950's attempting to make the communists angry.

It's kind of ironic that YOUR god's name is on mammon.Makes me wonder

History lesson time!
In God We Trust only became the official national motto of the USA (and therefore on the money) in 1956- yeah, clearly god is sooo important they decided to wait awhile. Before that, it was E Pluribus Unum, ("from many, one").
"As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion…"
From Article 11 of the Treaty of Tripoli 1797. Unanimously ratified by the U.S. Senate and signed by President John Adams.
Hmm, doesn't sound like religion is really that important at all.

Who said God is not important in the USA? Just because a few people don't want God mentioned does not mean that the majority of Americans don't think God is important.

Give the liberal, moral relativistic masses some more time. They'll try to get rid of his name. They already made that $1 coin and put the inscription "In God we trust" along the side edge… which is the first place on a coin to wear out.
Just keep on praying for this demented, Godless world we find ourselves in and believe that your prayers are heard and make a difference.
:o)

Maybe money talks and God thought that was the only way people would listen?
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
In God We Trust — all others, pay cash.
There is no God of Abraham, but in the time we were creating cash, religion was a much more important facet of everyday life, given that our understanding of the world was somewhat more limited.
Besides, it was a marketing slogan.
That said, the Founders used "God" as a metaphor, as they were Deists/Pantheists/Atheists.
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
Because He that holds things back is still alive & active in the U.S.A. Peace!!!
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
It should say…
In God we trust.
ALL OTHERS MUST PAY CASH!
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
God is still important to some, and his name is on the money as our forefathers knew that without Gods guidance a nation falls.
We are now in deep recession, at war, etc etc, our blessings do fade away, when we walk away.
When we push God out, he has to take his blessings with.

This is because everything in America, even dating back to when this country was formed has "two-faces"….
America was deemed a new un-charted country yet there were people living on the land.
When the pilgrams landed, they wanted to befriend the Indians, then they tried to change their lifestyle.
Declaration declares everyone equal yet there are slaves.
Politics alone in this country are bias. People say one thing then do another. It's just the way this country was founded and it runs.
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
It is so because politicians may find this to be easy way to get into the heart of people to remain in government for a long time.
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
Well considering there's only one reference to god and several to masonry… you're sort of cherry-picking, aren't you?
May 5th, 2008 at 2:05 am
yeah I can imagine your god would be thrilled about being on your money - all about the materialism is your god
you americans get weirder every day
