Who else thinks that "in god we trust" should be removed from US currency?

I think it reflects poorly on the U.S. as a nation. We might as well have a leprechaun on the five dollar bill with "in unicorns we trust" scrawled on the back. I'll bet "in God….." will be removed within the next 20 years. what do you think?
ya im down with the leprechaun too, that would be sweet

  1. As an atheist, I agree. I would also vote for the leprechaun.

i agree! as well as the bit about god in the pledge.

  3. It reflects reality in that our current administration doesn't understand the separation of church and state.

No it shouldn't be, because some of us actually believe in God.

    Like Me.

I think it should be, but I'm not particularly bothered as I rarely carry cash.

The U.S. has far greater issues to deal with that come from the religious right than simply some silly words printed on our money.

  6. It makes us no better than Nicuragua.

It wouldn't bother me either way, but if I had a preference, I would have it removed…

It's a nice dream, but I doubt it. I agree, why not put the FSM on the dollar?

I do. Instead it should say, "Rum is a tasty treat." Lucky, the Lucky Charms leprechaun, could be dancing a jig and taking a swig from a bottle of rum.

I think its unfair. America has a hell of alot more religions that dont believe in "God"

  11. It should be removed I just don't want to spend tax dollars to do it. But each time we mint a new coin it should not contain a reference to religion.

  12. well i was watching Jack Van Impe i think was the program and the god on the dollar bill is not The God who created all things (of abraham isaac and jacob) , they said its a idol called the sun god

I would LOVE to see the god thing taken off my money. I actually try to use checks and credit cards so I can avoid using cash. It just makes me feel dirty.

  14. I think this country is becoming evil enough to do just that. Anyway, we might as well remove it, this socialist government of ours trusts in laws not God.

I am Buddhist, I don't care if US currency has in God we trust. It doesn't harm me, it doesn't harm anyone. People are offended about everything these days, except for the lack of human rights around the world!

  16. I think it doesn't really matter either way. In 20 years we probably won't be using very much actual currency.
My debit card says nothing about god.

  17. You think it reflects "poorly" on our nation that we were founded on a set of beliefs that involve treating each other with respect and love? I think it speaks very highly for our nation that we have such a strong, faith-based background, and I for one am proud to be a part of a nation that still retains its heritage.

I couldn't care less. Ceasar's things to Ceasar. God's things to God.

  21. so how does it bother you really? I think you just like reading your questions right? Still, it is your opinion or are you just trying to be funny? Would the unicorn really matter no you just have to write something and sound off.
Its a good thing I will not be judging you when you do pass away and we all will die one day and then the Day of Judgment even if you do not believe it will happen and boy are you going to be mad at your "atheist friends." I sure wouldn't wanna be you.

As a Jew, I agree… even though I personally believe in G-d, I don't think the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST" should be on our money. After all, not all Americans believe in any particular god, and our money is for all of us to use. In addition, really feel it violates our Constitution by having the government try to establish some sort of religion.

If people have a hissy fit about the phrase's removal, the least they could do is agree to have it *slightly* more inclusive by adding a simple "S" as in "IN GODS WE TRUST."

  23. I think we should change it to "In God and Mary we Trust."

I have to say I'm surprised to see that the answers to this question are almost unanimous!

I also agree that the phrase has no place in the currency of a secular nation. But while courts have agreed with this proposition, they have labeled it 'de minimis', meaning that it's such a small violation that nobody's rights are really violated. And I guess I see it that way too.

Likewise the words 'under God' added to the Pledge of Allegiance. (And for that matter, why do kids pledge allegiance to a FLAG? Why not to a COUNTRY?)

As for the removal of these things, I think that we may someday (soon) come to our senses and re-assert the separation of church and state. I think the Bush administration has done serious damage to the cause of Christians who believe the US is a 'Christian nation'. Perhaps the pendulum will start to swing the other way soon enough. (Well, I can hope so anyway).

It should be removed. The U.S. Government is officially NEUTRAL towards religion.

"In God we trust" favors theists who believe in a personal god.

Leaving it off does not favor atheists. An inscription, "We do not trust God" would favor atheists.

@St. John Bosco - So where does that leave those of us who don't? Is our currency a proper medium for the government of all of us to be making religious statements on behalf of some of us?

@michelle O - First of all, it's not a matter of choice–not that there's any realistic alternative. It's about the government making religious statements.

Second, the motto was not originally on the currency. It was first used just after the Civil War, and wasn't made mandatory on all currency until the McCarthy era.

I feel if it bothers people so much they shouldn't use money or work to earn money if it is so offensive. But I like it on there and so did the people of our country when it was designed.

  27. it doesn't bother me as long as the monies good, not counterfeit LoL We,in the usa also G-D in the pledge of allegience, atheists in court swearing on the bible they don't believe in,,So why choose only our currency if you're bothered so much?
My answer is sincere not a put down btw

I do, I do. Freedom from religion is very important.

However, until this occurs, we could have "in IPU we trust", or "in FSM we trust." As long as we don't have Xenu on our money.

  29. Yeah, we shouldn't be worry about petty issues like poverty, unemployment rates, or terrorists' plots. Let's deal with the important issue and get rid of God off the money; heck, He's being removed from everywhere else.

  30. I don't think that it should be removed, because it is IN GOD I TRUST- however even if the words were removed, you will never remove the existence of God, and one day you too will say, "I wish that I had trusted in God"

Everyone who is rational thinks that.

The religious crap probably will disappear from the US in the next few decades (since the current generation that is taking over is less religious than any previous generation).

  32. It shouldn't be there, but there are far more important issues in the US than a few words scribbled on a scrap of paper.

  33. what you guys forget is the whole reason why this country exists, it's because the colonists tried escaping religious persecution to allow them to worship God the way they choose to and they chose to by adding it to our constitution, pledge, and currency. This country is based on God there is no escaping God. get over it or move.
