I've exchanged money both going and coming. Coins aren't readily exchanged because they're hard to ship. I would suggest traveler's checks that way you don't have to worry as much about the exchange rates.

Get at least a little money in euros before hitting France. I was extremely uncomfortable our first afternoon there because every bathroom we could find was pay, and we didn't yet have local currency.

The easiest and least expensive way to do it is to take your ATM card and withdraw cash at an ATM. Don't take travelers checks.

By using an ATM, you will receive a much better exchange rate than with travelers checks or cash. And, ATMs are open 24/7. You don't have to pay attention to getting money before the bank closes for the night, weekend or bank holiday.

You will find ATMs at the airport, so you can get euros as soon as you arrive.

Just be sure to call your bank before you leave and tell them that you are traveling to France. Otherwise, their security process may flag French transactions as "suspicious" and they will cut off your card. If you call them and tell them, you won't have any problem.

I stopped carrying travelers checks eleven years ago and have never missed them. ATMs are far more convenient and I get more euros for every dollar. Use your credit cards whenever possible (again, a better exchange rate than travelers checks) and use cash from your ATM card for everything else.
