How do I go about exchanging US currency in Cuba?
Are US dollars really illegal there?

You can change your US dollars legally in Cuba but you will be charged for that…so you'll be losing too much.
It's better to change CAD, UK Sterling, Mexican Pesos, Euros in Cuba.
You can change your money in the airport, at the hotels, CADECA money exchange offices, and banks.
Don't forget that US credit cards/travellers cheques are not accepted in Cuba.
