How to read the currencies?

For example in 1990, Japanese yen is 257 and US dollar is 1.79 which one is the biggest? is it Yen? Because 257 is a higher number than 1.79. Thanks

Please try and understand how international currencies are mentioned. It is not only the number or figure but it depends how it is related to each other.

If 1 USD is 50 INR; it means for purchasing a thing which costs one american dollar , you have to pay 50 indian rupees.

you can see comparative currency on http://www.xe.com .
