What was the currency (or whatever their form of economy was) in Biblical times?

My group and I doing a project in my religion class (to make a newspaper based on a book in the Bible; we have the two books of Samuel). What did the Israelites use as money, or if they didn't have money, what did they do as their economy?

Samuel's time, the Akkadian Shekel, or just shekel.

  2. The shekel that was made of silver, and they had trade ledgers that used things like cows & wheat as money.

They also had had Roman currencies which their were for most that time 3 of, and as many as five, The Romans had a medal 3 medal market based currencies that were controlled in price by taxes on items made of them, and tax exchanges of them that reduced their size. The aureus was (gold), the denarius was (silver), the sestertius was (bronze), the dupondius was also (bronze). The reform of Diocletian which created denominations such as the argenteus (silver) and the follis (silvered bronze). After the reforms Roman coinage consisted mainly of the gold solidus and small bronze denominations.
