I'm going on holiday to China soon, but I have just heard that I am not allowed to travel with more than 6000yuan. How can I take my money into China if I want to exchange it at todays rate. The value of the UK pound will drop significantly between now and when I go, so I really don't want to withdraw it from cashpoints when I get there. What can I do?

No, that is not correct
You can not export or import more than 6000 rmb (Chinese money into China)
At the same time you can bring foreign currencies up to a max. of USD 5,000 any thing else and you have to declare.
There is not much you can do apart from bring in your 6,000 rmb and your 5,000 dollar allowance in UK pounds.

I have never heard of such rule.
I have been to China 20+ times in the past 6 years. Bringing average RMB15,000 each time and never had any problem at all.

From Shanghai customs website: "RMB20,000 cash or above, or any other foreign currencies in cash equivalent to US$5,000 or above". I'm not exactly sure how updated it is. My husband and I have been back and forth China quite often. We don't declare everything, such as laptops, cameras, jewelries, etc…

Visitors are allowed to carry into China a limited quantity of duty-free goods including:
2 liters of alcoholic beverages
400 cigarettes
50g (2 ounces) of gold or silver
US$ less than 5,000
Chinese RMB with a total less than 20,000 yuan
Reasonable amount of perfume
1 still camera and reasonable amount of film
The cash allowance of RMB is in ADDITION to foreign currency cash allowance.
Enjoy your trip!

The cash limit is RMB 20,000 and/or US$ 5000 (or same in other currencies).

Look at the bottom:
"There are no quantitative restrictions imposed on the foreign currencies, traveler’s checks, or letters of credit brought in. "
