Because the people who first came to this land beginning in 1620 (Pilgrims) and most all those that followed came because they believed very strongly in God. That belief carried on to the majority of the men we call our founding fathers...the ones who wrote the Declaration of Independence and later the Constitution. The Constitution itself was how they saw God's wishes for this land. Unfortunately, since that time, our Constitution has been amended not only directly...but indirectly by our government. It's basis (God's wishes for us) has been all but forgotten and replaced with man's wishes and agenda. The words In God We Trust was the mantra of the believers who helped us to achieve our greatness.

Because a Christian group petitioned it to be that way.

Did you know that the phrase "under god" was not added in the pledge until the 50's?

It's our heritgage. I am an atheist of Christian heritage and that practice does not bother me a bit.

I fully understand why most folk want/need to believe in their god/s; I just don't want them forcing their beliefs on me since I don't force my lack of belief on them.

Um...because the United States has a history of being Christian in it's culture. What's wrong with that? I really don't understand why is such a big deal to people. If I go to the Middle East, even somewhere like Dubai, which is really liberal for that region, I'm not gonna get angry with them for having any references to Islam or Allah. It's part of the culture, and I don't believe we should hide or rewrite our culture and past traditions just because people get all offended over it. Big deal. Oh, and I believe the phrase "In God We Trust" was added to U.S. currency in the 1950's if that's relevant. I still think it's no big deal.
