Do you need a passport to return foreign currency to your bank?

Someone told me that you need a passport to return foreign currency to your bank. I have a lot of spare Euros and Pounds left over from my traveling days and my passport is expired.

  1. no.

but they may charge you a premium to exchange.

  2. Not in most countries. However you may be required to identify yourself if the amount is large and that requires a photo ID (legal requirement in some countries, as large financial transactions often have to be reported to authorities and are recorded and investigated as possible money laundering operations).
