On a previous question I had asked where I could cash a certain Turkish Lira. I did not know that it had been discontinued and had brought to to a bank to be authenticated. They told me they could not cash it due to its being "old".
I did some further digging and found that this Turkish Lira (two 250,000 Lira bills) had been discontinued but was still redeemable for the current exchange rate (0.67 USD = 1 Lira) until the end of 2009. The banker said this was kind of like the US $1000 bill.
My research said that I had to bring this to a Turkish bank. I could not find out however if I had to have it cashed IN Turkey or at a Turkish bank like Chicago’s or New York’s. There is an *official* Turkish bank in New York besides the Turkish Embassy.
I know this is getting long but if I could get this money it would be life changing for my family so I want to pursue it as much as I can.
Thank you.
Howard L - I don’t know where you’re getting your sources or if you even researched this at all. If you go to the official bank of Turkey website it outlines exactly the specifications for dealing with this currency.
If you read my description is says that until the end of 2009 the Turkish Bank will honor the old Lira and pay the exchange rate in full.
Basically 500,000 Turkish liras = 334,247 U.S. dollars.
From 2010 to 2019 the Turkish Bank will still accept the old Lira but the exchange rate drops down to .25.

Isnt it annoying how back in the beginning of the year it was around NZ$1.82 for US$1.00 and right now its only $1.41!!!!
Why is thi happening?? A copule of weeks ago it was $1.44, its going down so fast - does this mean that soon it will be $1.39 and so on?? Will it go back up? And when??
