After the Confederate money became worthless, the Union greenbacks weren't much better. People wanted gold and silver. Trouble was, there wasn't enough to go around, and banks could still print their own money. It was supposed to be backed by gold or silver, but many just printed money. The panics (old fashioned name for depressions) that inspired by such practices resulted in the establishment of the Federal Reserve in 1913. That didn't stop the Great Depression, but it did keep our money from becoming worthless. Hell no!
