My girlfriend found $6312 worth (did the currency exchange calculator sites and this was the average amount) of what appears to be cien australes, which is a withdrawn currency from central banco de argentina, and I’m wondering if it can be exchanged to american still. I saw on some sites that it can’t be and on some sites that it can (but the currency will then be withdrawn from the circulation, my guess would be by fire). I also understand that collectors would buy this for like 1/100th of the price (or something like that).

If it is already out of circulation then yes, the government will not accept that cash, so neither will anyone in Argentina. As a result the currency is worthless. Some coin collectors are willing to pay for old currency though, for example a silver dollar from 1865 is probably worth a good chunk of cash because it is hard to find and coin collectors think it is cool. That’s about the only way you will get any value for currency that is out of circulation.
